Hey guys. I caught a pair of 8'' rainbow trout the other day in a no size limit pond and took em home to make a small snack with n thought hmmm Ill try them out in my tank for a bit. In my tank I have an oscar a pecock bass and an extremely large feeder goldfish that survived from last fall lol. the first day the trout were kinda mopey (due to stress of the move) but the next day they adjusted (The tank was about 75 degrees) and went crazy fighting with each other. So I took one out to eat and the other one started attacking the other fish. I figured ok pecking order stuff and decided to let it be however things got worse and the fighting got so bad I had to take him out of there too. I would like to note that the trout did start eating hikari gold pellets the second day in the tank!

So to anyone that would like to keep rainbow trout try to keep them in a tank with each other or maybe fish more agressive than them.

wow i wouldnt think they would be so active at that temp or on second day in the tank, crazy
oh and :welcome: to MFK

Thanks for the welcome :) I too was suprised that they were so active at that temp after reading that they would not do good in anything but cold water.

I wouldn't think they would be an aggressive fish, and I would be wrong apparently.

I dunno if this is valid but at Cabelas in there trout pond/tank Most of the huge trout are pretty bruised up, and some of the smaller ones have tattered fins and messed up mouths.
Not sure if its from fighting though...

rainbows are aggressive feeders, especially in hatchery situations and the damage is usually from crowding in concrete raceways. they generally aren't aggressive with each other.

A friend of mine tried to keep some rainbow trout he caught. They did pretty good for a while but he had a chiller running on the tank. Maybe that kept them a little calmer??
