Wear a mask, goggles, and gloves. The smell of 100% silicone, no matter what color it is, is like a mix of vinegar, bleach, and pool chlorine and will hit your nose eyes and throat with the force of Mike Tyson. As for the gloves part, that's more of a convenience thing, because once silicone gets on your hands, you will have to wait out the half hour or so until the silicone dries to get it off. Trying to wash it off will only result in it smearing all over your hands. At which point it's more of a fun thing depending on your mindset, because it dries to more of a film, and it's like pulling dry glue off your hands in elementary school. Except with more of a mature mind and less time to spare, it's more of an annoyance, especially when you're eating fried chicken for dinner and your figure out a flake of vinegar scented silicone is still crusted on your hand when you're licking your fingers afterwards.

Personally as a carpenter I've never had much of a problem with Silicon if you use a gun. Theres really no need to get close to it.
