Wart on my florida gar????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i recently bought a gar w/ the same lumps. i believe it is lymphocystis. it is a viral infection and from what i understand can not be treated, but can be suppressed. raised water temps, salt, and a low stress environment will help it go away.

anyone else? feel free to add/correct me?

won't really hurt him, but is transferable to other fishes. usually fishes get it from being bitten or rubbing up against other fishes with the infection. as jordan stated, it's viral. there is really nothing that can be done about it, but just make sure you provide clean water and perhaps bump up your water changes.

aside from that, it has to run its course and then it will be gone; it's relatively harmless, and i've never lost a fish or had any major problems because of it.--

it could come back, but doesn't normally seem to do so. any bouts i've had with it have been very few and far between...you're more likely to get it when introducing a new fish to the tank, and also potentially if water quality is degraded, which may reduce potential resistance to the virus (although that last explanation is just an educated guess) --

ps-- i have not had any experience with rays getting this (although i have kept rays before), but it seems like a rare occurrence for them to contract this...you may have to ask someone more experienced in rays.
