Today I bought a rainbow cichlid from my local lfs for $70, I couldn't find anybody selling them or any info on the average price but I had never seen one either so I decided to pick it up, they assure me it would get more color as it got older as it is currently a grayish white.
Was I ripped off?

Is a deep sea rainbow cichlid the same as a that? I just looked at the receipt and that is what's on it. I am just now getting into cichlids and only have 4.
You never mentioned size of fish and background(WC vs CB) info but $70 sounds high.
Apologies, he is about 2.5-3" and I'm sorry but I'm not sure what "WC vs CB" means?
Wild caught vs captive bred. Most LFS stock captive bred cichlids but occasionally WC fish are brought in, depending on store.
Oh to be honest I have no clue. I can't seem to find anything by googling the name "deep sea rainbow cichlid" though.
If you are from the states, then the answer is yes you got ripped off. They are not as common in most LFS's, but one around me has a nice bright one at 20 bucks, and you can also order them from imperial tropicals (always high quality), where they only cost 12.99 for a 3 inch fish, although you need to buy 45 dollars worth of stuff for free shipping, you could have gotten 3 of them or something else and still be hell of a lot cheaper.

Ouch! I would say that it is a rip off, however if it's a fish that you wanted maybe it is worth it??? That's how I think of it, but the LFS should not have charged you 70 bucks.
