i was thinking of getting a gar?

what would be a good first?

how many are there, spotted, alligator, florida?

are there any species from the amazon?

and why is it that ive only seen them at my local fish stores for sale at like 10inch and bigger?

are there fry big or something? or have i just been unlucky trying to find smaller ones?
 
i have a 4" alligator gar and he is awesome. Florida gar seem to easily be found in sizes 8" plus, but both are great fish.

agreed. and dont even consider an alligator gar unless you have the correct space to house it. a florida gar would be a good start. they are commonly found and for a fairly decent price. floridas could live in a standard 125 (72x18) for a while but you should have at least a 2ft wide tank to house for life. good luck with your endeavour!
 
Read the stickies.

You see big gar at the LFS because people buy them without reading the stickies and then ditch them at a local shop. :irked:

and to everyone else, ofcourse ill do more research and thank you guys for the advice, i have a big enough tank now and im saving up for my 700g!
