washed out ?

i was under the impession that using a light colored substrate : sand : would cause a fish to stay washed out, but i see on pics here that it does'nt seem to affect that & thats cool. which is better dark or light? for the fish or is it personal preference ?

It depends on the fish. Most people are probably going to recommend dark/black sand though, that's the general consensus around here.

It seems like if you use light/white sand you'd want dimmer light (for most fish anyway), that's the next thing I'm going to try. My lights are bright and in combination with my sand I think it's too bright for the fish.
 
Here are two fish that were affected significantly when switching from white to black sand. You decide which you prefer.
