Recently, I was buying some food for my Pyxie frog in a local reptile store in Washington State. I was talkin' to the guy at the counter for a little while and he asked what I had. He immediately informed me that another local store had told him and a few of his customers that these guys were illegal in this state. He said that they were considered an invasive species, and that PetSmart (where I bought him as a little guy) gets around it by calling them Pyxie frog and not African Bullfrog.

Now, my question is: has anyone heard about this? I certainly haven't and it doesn't sound right to me. I know that the Bullfrogs that we have in the wild up here aren't from here and are an invasive species, but it seems to me that an amphibian that needs to be much warmer than our winters out here get (and since even the summers on the western side of the state are not very warm) that if released they wouldn't survive (or thrive) long enough to endanger the balance of the ecosystem.

Was this guy full of crap? Had his frogs mixed up (he admitted he didn't know much about amphibians and didn't even have any in the store)? If anyone knows anything that would be awesome. Thanks.

and if you already have it who cares. just dont dump it in a lake if you get sick of it...give it to a home.

Google tells me nothing re: banned frogs in Washington. American bulls are an invasive out there I think, I suppose a ban on "bullfrogs" is a possibility knowing how the government generally works these things. It would seem pointless anyway as the American bullfrog is already well established.

Well thanks everyone. I was pretty sure the guy didnt really know what he was talking about when it came to this.

Oh jeezus I would never dump Kronos in the lake. Haha I love his fat little body and giant mouth way too much to do that to him!

Just an FYI. The person that told you they were illegal MAY have been referring to the "african clawed frog" or "underwater clawed frog" of the genus xenopus. I moved out of the state many many years ago but I know that when I lived in Calif. they had a ban on the clawed frogs as an injurious species. It's possible that Washington state has one as well on this species (Xenopus laeivus). This may or may not be what he was referring too.

i doubt claweds are ilegal in washington because they are legal in oregon, where for the most part, its warmer.
hes probably just mis informed but alot of poelple in the industry talk crap about petsmart and co, i'm not saying its what he did, i've just heard it many times before.
also, as far as i know they could be ilegal, they are in oregon, which is ridiculous. but seriously, what authoritative figure would be able to id a pyxie anyway. i wouldn't worry about it man, just be smart about.
