About ten years ago, I had a reed fish (Rope fish). I had it for about three months prior to the incident, and had a great time taking care of it. It was fairly active, it attracted a lot of attention from outside of the glass, and was overall a very popular fish, even alongside my sixteen inch tiger oscar. Well, I had let the tank, a 64 gal, get a little dirtier than that of which I liked. I had also noticed that I hadn't seen my rope fish for awhile. I didn't know if my oscar had gotten him, or he had left the tank via too much momentum through the water into the air, and eventually on the floor, in which the cat would have taken it somewhere. So, I had assumed there was foul play involved somehow. I decided to clean my tank thoroughly, hoping to find the rope fish maybe hiding in the sand somewhere. In the tank, I had a plastic piece of bog wood in the tank , and was in the process of cleaning, lifted it out of the water, shook it, and then all in slow motion mind you, I see my rope fish sliding out the drainage hole of the plastic bog wood as I was shaking it, then I heard a slight snap, or crackle, and then instant death. The rope fish was hiding, or hibernating, or something, and I had just broken it. So, in conclusion, watch what you clean, especially if your fish is hiding inside.
