If you take some crushed coral out of water does the ph change automatically or does it require a water change for the ph to lower? Does ph lower on its own when you take out whats causing it to rise up?

thanks! :D

Taking SOME out probably won't do much on it's own. Doing a water change will lower the pH IF the tap water's pH is lower than the tanks for a short period. Then, as the remaining crushed coral acts on the new water, the pH will rise again.

pH is the instantaneous measurement of the acid/base level. Crushed coral is a buffer. Adding a buffer increases the alkalinity (the resistance to changing pH levels). To allow the pH to return to your tapwater level you'd probably have to remove all of your buffering agent (crushed coral). Dan

thanks dan, i removed the coral last night and will do a water change today. would taking the coral out and doing a water change possibly put my fish into ph shock?

i know that driftwood lowers ph, anybody know if it matters what kind?

i might have some malaysian driftwood i might add if its doesnt lower to where i want it...:)

anybody?

come on guyz! i dont wanna do a water change today if its gonna send my fish into ph shock.

Why are you messing with you pH? It sounds like you could be putting more stress on your fish by changing your pH. If everything is staying stable, I would put the crush coral back in. If I am correct, all driftwood will lower your pH.
