I was at a friends today, he has a 55gln and there is often times lots of smoke, various types, in his apartment. I was wondering if there is any exchange between the water and smoke were they to come in contact (if there was a lot of smoke in the room)? Just curious if ppl who smoke cigarettes or something all the time in the house can somehow get any of the chemicals into the tank. Odd question I know

All those chemicals will enter the water. Especially since the vapors will condense on the cool water. The fish will get to bathe in the heavy metals and other products of second hand smoke until a water change is done. I would expect that smoking is bad for the fish just as it is for the smoker.

And for more reference just look at bong water sometime, thats smoke and water interaction and that water is nasty.

For fun: Ask a computer tech about a time he has worked on computers of smokers. absolute horror stories.

the bong water is not a fair comparison..
your sucking ash and resin into the water which is highly contributing to the blackness of the water.

To answer the op question no. No chemicals will enter the water harming the fish. Think of it this way If your underwater in a swimming pool. And people above water are chain smoking in the enclosed room the pools in. Will you get lung cancer?

hahah good replies. Yeah bongs a bit different thats a big direct contact vs just smoke sort of sitting in the air.
Also I do not know any computer tech ppl so

was not about lung cancer I mean more of the crap that is in smoke, that which we cannot see. Not an importaant post at all I was just curious when I saw smoke billowing around the top of the tank whether or not any chemicals could get in there.

Unless you are capable of breathing underwater, I don't think that's a fair comparison.
