for a planted tank, how much water should be taken out and how often?

To determine your water change regiment, you need to know what all your water source has for nutrients. You also need to know what levels those nutrients are in your tank.

You can put monster stocking, but you just have to have plants that can grow fast enough to keep up with the nitrates.

i do 50% water changes in my tanks.

I do 50% changes also. Usually I do the water changes bi-weekly.

In my planted Oscar tank I do 75% changes 2xs a week This keep Nitrates (Below 10) nice and low and cleans up after my messy and well loved fish When you Vaccume be sure to get around the bases of the plants. Lots of fish gunk like to gather there... I dose twice a week with Flourish Excel (right after water changes) and my Java fern, Banana Plants, Anachris, and Bacopa Carolinga grow quickly!
