they can be a hassle huh? i just had an idea, or maybe some1 makes a system like this already. it would be a faucet hook up where the water being pushed in turns a gear in which turn pumps water out. i was thinking put a device on it that estimates the gallons changed too, and maybe even an auto set to stop after certain gallons. who makes it or please some1 make something like this to make my life easier. lol. input?

That's a great idea, I'm going to try that. I'll look around for a top-off float with a high flow rate. You could also drill the aquarium with some PVC pipe leading to a drain area and attach a valve to the pipe so all you have to do is open the valve and close it when you have enough water removed.

a modified toilet bowl float might do the trick

This is a good idea for a couple tanks but how about doing 30 tanks or more ? I would like to do something like this myself but I dont think it would be economical. Any suggestions ?

I guess you could theoretically run all tanks off of one 1 pvc tube and 1 drain handle so they all drain at once

The float would go in the sump.

Are the tanks all in the same room or relatively close to each other?
If you had one major sump that fed a series of many tanks or to top off many sumps it would work, especially if you do cluster sumps. But plumbing for that starts to get complicated if the tanks are scattered around a house.

That would work for draining but not filling.
If all of the branches on the pump side had ball valves that would work. The tanks closest to the pump would need to be restricted. Otherwise majority of the water will go to the first few tanks.
