if you stop the water flow to do a waterchange will the temporary lack of water to run over the bi-media kill the beneficial bacteria? ive heard the bacteria dies VERY easily? fact or :banhim:

Some will die off but i think as long as the filter media is stilll moist, the whole colony wouldnt get eradicated in that hour or so that you use to chage your fish water.

Agreed. As long as the media is moist youre good. Just make sure you dont pour tap water directly into the media as chlorine and chloramine will quickly kill of the beneficial bacteria.

thanks bros  :clap

This is possibly along the same lines so will post it here.

I notice that after my weekly water change, the water goes cloudy for a few hours. Its usually cleared up fine by the next day but am just wondering if it has anything to do with bacteria die off in my wet/dry when I do a water change? It usually takes me about 30-45min to complete a WC and the bio media is kept moist during this time. I fill the tank straight from a tap and hose and dump de-chlor straight into the tank where the tap water enters.

Otherwise I'm thinkihng it might be micro bubbles of gas in the water or a bacteria bloom? I just never bothered to investigate why it does that? :(

It could be a couple of things when hard water warms up in the summer it tends to come out of the tap cloudy but shortly returns back to normal. The cloudiness you see is a bacteria bloom in the water. On a different note, I like to age my water 24 hours that way the p.h. is stable.
