I have bumped up my water changes to two 50% a week and I can keep my nitrates at abotu 15 - 20. This is because my water tap has nitrates in it, I know that products that clam to remove nitrates don't work all that will, but could they help prefilter my tap water? I bought an R/O and it didn't remove the nitrates, possible due to lack of water pressure going into the unit, or cheap membrane.

i dont know of anything off the top of my head that filters nitrate out.. there are chemical ways to remove it (im not recommending chemicals i dont like them i just know they exist)..

have you thought about setting up a tank/tub/bin/barrel with some plants in it to soak up the nitrates? this might not be the greatest idea in the world.. but it came to mind

Actually that is the best way...

Set up a tank or tub in front of a window with pothos vines in it. They are excellent at removing nitrates and they don't require a lot of light. In a test that I had done, they had removed all the nitrates within 24 hours. (The test was years ago, so I don't remember the exact details.)

You may want to drain the pothos water to a lower container while straining out any roots before using it in your other tanks.

Man I love pothos they are some of the strognest plants ever, I have some that I have abused like no other and they keep living. I have put them without water for 6 months, had them in too much water, and put them where there was no light. They got a little sick but never died.
