For water changes in my 10 gallon tank I have been filling up 2 gallon pitchers with tap water and then adding Tetra Aqua Safe. I normally let the water sit for about an hour before adding it to the tank. Am I doing this right? I know this is probably an extremely stupid question, but I am trying to imagine how you guys do it with your 100+ gallon tanks. Thats would be alot of water pitchers sitting around the house :nilly:

Thanks for helping a newb!

Most people on here have siphons (like Pythons) hooked up to their tabs or auto water changers.

I don't let my water conditioner sit with the water that long, but it certain could not hurt. I normally only let it sit for about 10 mins before I turn my filters back on after a water change.

I add my dechlorinator about 10 minutes to my water then add it to my fish tank, but that's just me.........

I drain and vacuum at the same time, then plug the hose into the faucet and refill while adding dechlorinator, saving half the dose for after I shut the water off and adding it last. I only wait about one or two minutes and then start the filters again.

Awesome! I guess I need to go and get one of those pythons. I haven't cleaned the gravel yet. Could explain the slight spike in ammonia this last week.

I do exactly the same thing.

The question concerns 100+ gallon tanks, as the original post states.

I didn't buy a python. I bought a length of garden hose and a little faucet adapter that lets me just cram the hose onto the bathroom sink for around $30.00 total at Lowe's. The "vacuum" portion fit perfectly into the garden hose just the way it came.

Don't waste your money on a python for a 10 gallon tank. What your doing is fine. You can speed it up if you like when adding the tetra aqua safe, give the water a quick stir wait 2 mins then add to the tank.

i do a DIY python/garden hose hack and add dechlorinator as it refills. it really depends on your local tap water and its chemistry.
Sometimes you get lucky, geographically speaking.
