Hello MFKs.... I have a 180g tank with full of live stock and plants. I do WC once a week and before I do WC my tank's reading Nitrite and Ammonia are ZERO, Nitrate=40ppm.

My question is how high of the Nitrate can goes before I can do WC without hurting my fish? Thanks for any info.

Any more than 40 and you'll have problems. How big of a water change do you do? If I were you, I would do a water change twice a week.

@ 40ppm before you are doing a water change in a 180g sounds like your tank is well established. Great job:thumbsup:.

Stay consistent with your weekly chore and you will not hurt your fish.

Usually I do 30% WC one a week or every 10 days or so... I want to try to push it to do WC one every two weeks that is why I want to know how high of a Nitrate that my fish can take but I also don't want to exceed the limit. So anything below 80ppm is a safe side right?

I live in San Jose, California. Nitrate in the tap water here contains almost 40ppm. Doesn't matter how many time I test the tap water here I never see it shows below 20ppm. Is there a way that I can get a better source of water for my fish guys?

The only thing I can think of right now off my head is pothos. They could help you with both lowering your nitrates and reducing your water changes from once a week to two weeks. Your best bet is anything that can reduce nitrates, I personally wouldn't want my nitrates over 60.

If possible try it out on smaller cheaper fishes...fishes are usually hardy and can get used to it. However, long term may cause short life span.
