was doing daily water change, but was puzzled why my tank's ph has increased, notmally it was in the range of 7. i just added filter wool into my sump.

when i checked the tap water it was coming out now at 7.8 , before it was at 7.
anything i should do? or i should be looking out for?

not sure if the change is due to storms here stirring sediment in the water reservoir?

any other preparation i should be doing? i usually do water change direct from tap , adding water conditioner before adding the tap water.

Were both the 7.0 and 7.8 pH measurements taken as the water exited the tap? pH can rise or fall as the water vents with the atmosphere and gas like CO2 begins to reach equlibrium. So make sure you're not comparing water strait from the tap to water that has been in a tank or cup for several hours. In addition, pH can fall in a tank because acids erode the buffering system.

I'd check the pH of your tank after 2 days and see if pH has fallen. Do you have a KH test kit? Water with pH of 7.0 and 7.8 will read different KH on test kits. That would tell you if something has changed with your water out of the tap.

In any case, a difference in pH between 7 and 7.8 will make vrtually no difference to your fish anyway. pH can determine things like the sex of fry in some species and whether or not certain fish will breed, but most fish can live within this pH range without any problem whatsoever.

thanks:) , My tank's ph is usually at 7, and out tap water is usually at 7 also.
but past few days i have been making daily water changes and testing for ammonia and PH.
yesterday noticed my Ph was unusually high after a water change, so i went to test the PH of water immediately coming out of the tap and got a high reading as well.

i have a KH tester, but i think its expired already , has been with me for a few years.
not sure if its because of continuous rain stirring up sediments.

so if i continue to do daily water changes, rays should also be able to handle ph of 7.8 or a little higher? I'll try to leave tap water in bucket and test after a day to see if it stays at 7.8

7.8 pH shouldn't be a problem. Ammonia is more toxic at higher pH but you're changing the water daily to keep that down I think. There's an MFK link on rays, pH and ammonia below. Are the daily water changes because you're having an ammonia spike or a problem with the biofiltration handling the bioload?

BTW - Check your water strait from the tap for ammonia (without adding water conditioner). It could be that your water treatment facility began using chloramines (ammonia bonded to chlorine). This would also explain the higher pH.

Is pH in the tank also 7.8 if you test right before a water change?

thanks :) doing daily water change due to injury to one of my Ray's tail being bitten.
but i also feel my tank is overloaded with the rays now. I'll be moving 2 of the bigger ones to my bigger tank.

We only have Chlorine here in our tap water , no chloramine .

oh..... Chloramine causes the Ph to be higher? I'll have to check.
but i'm suspecting its because of the rains stirring up sediments in the water reservoir.
