I just installed an external filter for my 4ft tank and am wondering if i still need to do water changes....
and if so how often?

how often am i supposed to clean the external filter too???

i'm a bit clueless...

As far as I'm concerned with fish-keeping there is a golden-rule - Always do regular water changes. Whether you have no filter, a small filter, or a huge filter. The filter you can clean whenever it is becoming very clogged with detritus, or when you notice the flow becoming slower. Otherwise just clean it every two weeks or so

You're gonna need to perform water changes to keep your nitrate levels in check.

Water changes are a must, 50% is a bit excessive though.

Carl.

it all depends on your level of nitrates. Test them weekly or daily even to determine how many water changes to do. Filters do not mean less water changes. Their job is to convert everything to nitrate, which is removed by water changes.
