because this new gravel im gonna put in will eliminate all nitrates and other harmful things

Is it "Magic gravel"?:D

Na.. just kiddin with ya, haven't heard of such gravel what is it?
Since your posting in the aro forum do ya have an aro? How big? Don't see any problem pulling out the old gravel, if it is small enough you can siphon it out with the water.

First of all, I hope my feeling isn't right, that you've never done a water change before. Poor fish, if I'm right.
But to your question - the only way to remove harmful "things" is to DO WATER CHANGES, and vac gravel - NOT simply change the gravel every... um... once a year or? How long has it been?

Just do regular water changes and vacuuming and ... presto... clean water (technically)

yea i got an aro its a jar about 5 inches maybe and i never done a water change had it about 3 weeks already hahaha and yea im planning on changing the rocks and these rocks are kind of like magic i guess it takes out the nitrates though and it makes the water super clear like crystal clear please tell me some info thanks

"magic nitrate killing rocks"??? lol ....water changes should be done about once every week...20-25% of the tank water at a time (dont forget to refill it w/ clean tap water, then add water conditioner...also, siphon out the debri and poop with a gravel cleaner...you DON'T have to take out the gravel or change it ;)

congrats on the Jardini! i just got my Jar 2 monthes ago :D

hope this helps

ps. check your filter media also, carbon media should be changed every month...

Taking that gravel out might do more harm than good to your poorly maitained tank. I say this from lack of proper maintanence and water changes.

Removing the gravel will only significantly reduce beneficial bacteria colonies that may have established.

Gravel has no affect on nitrates what-so-ever:irked: . It is the established colonies of bacteria that rid the tank of toxic ammonia. Please, don't let someone talk you in spending a bunch of money on "magic gravel" that cleans water. It DOES NOT EXIST.

Unless you really hate the gravel (your personal opinion) do not remove it. Just do like said earlier and maintain a proper water change schedule and condition/monitor accordingly.

You should add the water conditioner before you put the tap water in the tank. Ideally you should let it lie for 24 hours before putting it in the tank..

It looks obvious that Thomas is a newbie so let us help him along the way...

lots of guys wouldn't even ask our opinion on such a (for us ) trivial issue.

I agree with the other opinions expressed, don't take the gravel out, vacuum it and leave it be.

There are no magical rocks, not even in the US of A;)

The secret is water changes and more water changes.. and when you are siphoning water out of the tank put the syphon hose as close to the bottom of the tank, because it is there that the "bad stuff" lurks.

Enjoy!
