water changes and rock syphoning

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Syphoning you substrate removes lots of debris(uneaten food, fish poo, etc.) that will break down into ammonia. So by cleaning your "rocks" you will improve water quality. I have had some of my tanks that I would do weekly, while planted tanks I never do. You will just have to be the judge as to how frequently your tank will need it.

Hard to say, as the are many variables to consider. The main being nitrates, what is your nitrate level? I would say that there isn't a need to gravel vac with each of the two weekly WCs though.

with what would i test for nitrates something like a pool test kit or somehting to that degree sorry kinda new to all this testing just kinda winged it in past but am relizing that didnt go so well as i would like top quality fish now that i am more mature

No, they actually make a test kit for aquariums. You could also post your tank size, along with number, types and sizes of fish. Also what filtration your using?Members here could probably give you a pretty good idea whether you good or not regarding nitrates.

I would say with two 50% WCs per week, you should be looking pretty good.

ok so if i have 125gal with 2 magnum350 with factory media and also run an cascade 1500 with factory media with for said water changes should i be ok for a short time till i can make to lfs to get a rock syphon or should i look to get there sooner than later? the fish in take are 4 2.5in dovii that i feed well but it appears they eat just about all food that i give

Four 2.5" dovii in a 125g tank. You'll be fine for now. As your fish grow, more frequent gravel vacs will be needed. This along with an upgrade of filtration followed by a huge tank.

Are you looking to keep all four or looking to get a pair?
