Water changes and vacation?

I'm curious... what do you guys do when you have to leave your tank unattended for a period of time and don't have someone stopping by to do your feedings and maintenance?

I am comfortable with leaving my fish and not feeding them for a bit, but are there any ways to prepare a tank so it can go without a water change for a while without any bad effects?

When I went on my honey moon, I fed well up until two days before I left, did a 50% water change very shortly before I left, and all was well for 20 days. I did slowly start feeding again, just incase the BB had been damaged by the lack of ammonia over the past 2 weeks+
