How do you guys do water changes on large aquariums. I have a 90 gallon now and do it the old fashion way with buckets, I'm getting a 300 gallon soon and not doing buckets on this one. I figured I would get a python system. Only question is how do you treat the water when filling up the tank? Do you treat the whole tank after you fill it up? Thanks[h=1][/h]

I use a 450 gph pump to pump water out of my tank then I just refill fresh water to the tank from a spicket and garden hose in the basement

I treat the water with Prime and I dose the amount of new water that I am putting in

Thanks, do you also treat the tank before, during, or after you fill it back up?

I have a water storage tank , I keep treated water in.( water goes through carbon block / treated with Safe and H2o2 ).
I pump (500 GPH) water from my storage tank into my tank .Tank water is drained through sump into drain.

I use two 44gal brute trash cans filled the night before for my 180. I drain tank water into my sump until I've pumped 80 gallons from the tank. One of my return pumps is t'd to a garden hose adapter, which i use to pump the water to our garden.

If you're adding water from the tap untreated, you should add dechlorinator before adding water, dosed for your total aquarium water volume. Chlorine and chloramine are very effective at killing bacteria. Under dosing or adding water without dechlor is a good way to kill fish and your cycle.

appears not all my post went through on tap talk..? Here is why I do what I do.. depending upon your water supply ..large python water changes can cause issues. My water supply uses chloramine as a disinfectant..The levels always vary so you never know how much Prime to use. caused my tank to recycle more than once when I used the python method and changed large volumes of water > 25%

Plus according to Seachem you treat the entire volume of water not just the replacement water.. so you are constantly using a dosage of prime for 300 gallons every water change, gets expensive depending upon amounts of water changed.. By having a water storage tank you only treat that volume of water, plus it allows your tap water to degas and ph to stabilize.. ( my water supply has high GH , low KH ) so the water PH from the tap is high , but drops very quickly once exposed to the atmosphere.

once I started using a water storage tank and letting this treated tap water aerate for 24 hours..
Ive never had an issue caused by my water supply again..

Also if you have a large tank buy Seachem Safe instead of Prime it will save your pocketbook in the long run..
