Okay i do around 20% of water change for my 180 gallon. I usually keep salt but they label on the box says the salt that are added to the water will stay in the water and not go away. But if i do water changes should i add some salt back in for the water i took out for the change? And all my filter im running for the 180 all have carbon in them so does that affect the salt in the tank?
Thanks all

So your saying even i do water changes i shouldnt add some salt to make up for the salt i lost in the water changes? I know i shouldnt run all carbon filter but i might change some carbon for some other bio media.
Thanks

if you like to use salt you can. some people do, some dont. i only use salt when treating fish for things like ich or infections.

if you are going to use salt you would want to replace for as much water as you removed. but you do not replace salt when your just adding water that has evaporated, when water evaporates the salt will still remain in the tank. make sence?

Yea i know that but im just saying if i dont replace the salt that was with the water when i did my water change, sooner or later my tank will have very little to no salt at all, and i just want to keep it balanced at where it was before the waterchange. Sorry if im kind of confusing you...i only add salt because i dont want to take any chances for my fish getting sick and people say adding salt to your tank when the fish are sick or not will even promote their growth and are good for them.

Just for the amount of water you took out. Don't add it for the whole tank. Also if you are topping off the tank from evaporation don't add any more salt because you will increase the concentration. :)

I know. :D
Thanks all and that was what i was just trying to say all along. Thanks!

I agree.

If the list of the fish you keep below your question is acurate, you don't need to add salt, the waters those fish come from are soft and non-saline. If you kept archerfish, or chromides salt would be helpful, but for the fish you list, it's not needed.

How much salt do you add to a 20 gallon tank?
Also, how often should you add in salt when your fish are sick? I'm guessing with each water change?
