Water changes: what is frequent?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
frequent is as close to perfect water as can be .. zero nitrates and ammonia..
every 2 days in treating fish can be considered frequent but everyday is best. .
specially if you have a small hospital tank for the fish.

Nitrates always at zero? You must mean nitrites right? IMO anything less then one time a week is frequent.

For treating sick fishes everyday should be counted as frequent. Some people even change the water partially 2 times a day when treating sick fishes.

when my fish are sick i do it twice a week

"Frequent" for normal healthy fish is once a week, about 10% change. Sick fish, bepending on the size of the tank, and the fish is about once every day or every other day, you also have to keep in mind what that is going to do to the concentration of any meds or salt that you keep in the tank. If "frequent" water changes causes significant changes in PH or salinity it may do more harm then good for your sick fish...

When treating sick fish I would change 10% a day with slightly aged/ oxygenated water.

for my hospital tank i try to do it every day. Fish just responds positively to
daily water changes.

 I'm no expert, but IMHO, I think the word "frequent" should be replaced w/ "daily" when it comes to water changes in a 'sick' tank. My trial & error has brought me to 10/15% daily yeilding the best results. Now tank size & fish size might dictate some variations on the theme, but w/ my 29g sick tank, I've been successful -oooo- say 80% of the time. Daily gives the 'patient' the fresh charge needed when the resistance is low & fighting off the sickness. Just a theory mind you, no scientific proof but it works 4 me.
Peace, MONEY
