hi i have a 55 gal fowlr tank and was wondering is there actually any need to do water changes beause the live rock will remove al the ammonia nitrites and nitrates out of the water also i top it up due to evaperation so is there a need for water changes still?

rock will rarely remove nitartes. Nitrates are the end result of the nitrogen cycle and is produced rapidly. A tank that does not get water changes will also have build up of Phosphates and silicates and other chemicals, depending on the water source. It is imperative to keep doing proper water changes with fresh saltwater, both to avoid a major algea outbreak and for the general health of the fish.

Yea man, pretty much. I have a deep aerated sand bed, TONS of rock, an old system...and Im lucky that I do 30% water changes bi-weekly.

On a side note, not only do bad chemcials build up, but good chemcials get depleted.

Cool algae scrubber that guy built. Neat DIY...I wouldnt say his tank is gorgeous, but...whatever.

Additionally...he never claims ANYWHERE in his post that he doesnt do waterchanges. He also says that they do NOT REPLACE water changes. So lets get that clarified before someone tries something stupid.

Also if you get one of the gravel cleaners, you can clean up debris in the sand, such as left over fish food....
