I have been told a number of different things about water changes and just wanting everyones opinions please.I have 125 freshwater using 2 emperor 400 HOB's with a stock list ofStock list includes: 1 Andinoacara Stalsbergi(S/A) (True Green Terror), 1 Heros SP Super Red Severum(S/A), 1 Gold Severum(S/A), 1 Placidochromis Phenochilus (Africa)(Star Sapphire), 1 Vieja Synspilum (S/A)(Fire Head), 1 Hypselecara Temporalis(S/A) (Purple Chocolate),1 Microglanis Cf. Iheringi(S/A) (Bumble Bee Cat), 1 Jack Dempsey(C/A). and most fish are in the 6 to 7 inch range and was told I can keep these large fish in a 125 gal as long as I do 50 % water changes once a week. so the last 6 months I have been doing just that and parameters are always fine but just recently am treating tank for slight case of fin rot. All LFS tell me that 50 % is too much and that 15 to 20 should be enough.Just wondering why the fin rot popped up all of the sudden and have read that fin rot is sometimes caused by overstocking, but thinking if I do the large water changes this should be ok. I would like everyones thoughts on this Thanks.

I think that you need better filtration for your setup even with the 50% waterchanges. Imo that stocklist will be a bit much for a 125g once they are fully grown, but if you want to attempt it your filtration should be up to par.

+1 on extra filtration

i agree with these guys, i run the same filtration on a very lightly stocked 55, and at times feel its not even up to the task

What kind of filtration would you recommend?

Im all about sumps, but they arent for everyone. You could always look into adding an FX5, and adjusting your HOBS accordingly. If you have enough filtration I would imagine 50% a week water changes would be just fine.

I was under the assumption that if my 400 emperors are rated at 90 gallons each that would be plenty for a 125 gal tank, so am i missing something?

Just about all filters overrate what they can handle, plus every style of filter has its flaws which is why I over filter and use different combinations on my tanks. The filters you are using are limited by the cartridges. Once they are clogged the incoming water just flows over them instead of through them, and the carbon that's in the cartridges expire in 1-2 weeks. If you insist on using those filters, I would add some sort of large canister as well.

I think that many of us tend to over filter our tanks compared to what the manufacturer's recommend regarding the rating on their filters.

Do you have an aquarium test kit so you can share what your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels are for your tank? Fin rot may be a result of poor water quality or maybe some aggression among your fish that caused some injury.
