So my water chemistry has been f ing with my. I have a 125 w\30 sump a urchin pro that has been driving me up a wall but what is concerning me is my alkalinity which had been stable at 11dkh has in two days droped to 7.5dkh and its done this whilst i have been dosing it with twice the amount of buffer that was keeping it at 11. about 30ml a day was keeping it at 11 past two days i dosed 60 ml. also my calcium has not needed any buffer i was adding the same 30ml but it jumped to 600 so i have not added buffer for the past to days and it has dropped to 500-550. ph is good 8.3-8.4? so any ideas what would cause my alkalinity to flux like that?

What else changed in your system?

I cant really think of anything...but this is exactly why you dont want to use buffers if you can help it.

You risk big swings like this, and most of the time having less than ideal numbers is better than the swings.

my lfs guy told me that its where i need it to be and that the problem is most likely my calcium is to high which doesnt allow for the alkalinity to rise, basicly my tds is full so i am just going to stop buffing till the calcium drops into acceptablr range

you dont buffer calcuim, to raise calcium its calcuim hydroxide or calcuim chloride. you use bicarbonate to buffer the water which raises you kh, i think what you will find is you are adding to much calcuim which is reduceing you kh. no more hydroxide or chloride and slowly bring you kh up using bicarb
