What is the best way to get water circulating from the bottom of the aquarium up to the overflows (without using air)? Submerged powerhead? Use a canister and its intake to draw water near the bottom? As much as possible, I would like to minimize the visibility of intakes and returns.

What is the best way to return water to the aquarium coming through the overflow?

Would it be sensible to put bulk heads in the bottom of the tank to feed canisters?

I have the out lets of my Pumps facing the same direction. This does enough for me. Or add some powerheads low and facing the floor. If you have bottom dwellers like Rays. Given these are best with bare bottom tanks

I use powerheads pointed down and it makes the craps float up long enough for the overflow to catch it. I have the overflow on the left side of my tank and I have an FX5 intake on the bottom right side of my tank. I have 2 powerheads that are always on and the FX5 output nozzles pointed down to the bottom. For me, that makes enough circulation that either the overflow or the FX5 will catch the waste. If hiding the intake is really important to you, you could try having a black background and it'll make the FX5 intake/output less noticeable.

Oh great! Just what I am hoping for.

Add as many HOB filters (AquaClear 110) as can fit on back and also on each end of aquarium, depending on which sides of aquarium will be viewed.

Thank you for the info.... funny, having the powerheads pointing down seems contra-intuitive, but after thinking about it I can imagine how it could stir things up on the bottom. Which powerheads do you use?

I plan to have both overflows go to the wet/dry. And I figure an FX5 or two will be in the mix, if not right away, then eventually. Trying to decide if I should have two extra holes drilled in the bottom of the tank to feed the canisters rather than using the canister intake tubes down the back of the tank. I wonder if two strainers sticking up from the bottom any less intrusive than the normal canister intakes?
