Ok so I have been building my 300 gallon tank and i have started designing a filter system for it. I know i want it to be simple so heres what i came up with. he drawing below shows the general Idea. take a look at it and soak it in, now I have a question. Will the slits/holes in the pipes from the sump create suction because of the main stream of water through the pipe, or will they allow water to escape pushing debri forward. Or will they not have any function at all?

The basic idea of the design is so that can put wood near the back for hiding, but have all the poop and stuff blown to the front of the tank. This way it will be easier to scoop up. If the slits would create suction the poop would get sucked into themain pipe and go with te flow to the end of the pipe where it will be discarded towards the front of the tank. If it will create pressure/flow outwards then the poop would simply be blown towards the front of the tank.

I am not a physics expert so im not sure what will happen here, if you all think it will not cause suction and I will make the ends of the pipe smaller as to cause more pressure and more flowout of the slits rather than the end of the pipe.
I hope I explained this all and it makes sense
let me know wat you all think...

the Key is blockd by the mfk logo... the yellow pipes are the ones pumped back from the sump...

The slits would blow the poop toards the front of the tank.
The size of the holes at the end of the output pies would dictate how much flow of water would come out the slits. The smaller the holes the more pressure therefore more flow. You should just have a length of bar that goes across the back of your tank with holes drilled instead of slits.

yea thats what i was thinkin... does anybody know how i could make it create suction?

Only way I can think of is to create a venturi valve, but you wouldnt want to do that it would radically reduce your over all flow rate.

I agree with Clyde. Don't bother trying to create a suction, it won't be strong enough to suck any poop in. Unless you attach a the intake of a powerhead, but thats something completely different.

so i shud just let it blow poop towards the front...
do u think this whole thing is even a good idea?

Are you planning on using substrate? If not, and you're going to have a bare floor, you could consider using "poop suckers". We have extreme mechanical filtration with two spa filters connected to a Hammerhead pump. Besides the main uptake, we have two "poop" suckers strategically placed where the water tended to eddy the debris. Feces and debris literally scuttle across the bare tank floor and are quickly removed from the tank. We have two 2"+ pacu, two large oscars and two 12"+ pleco--all large very messy fish. In the year+ they are been in their 300 gallon tank, we have not had any debris to vacuum out. The poop suckers are 1" pvc pipe covers in black hose placed 1/4" from the floor.

They work very well, and we do not miss vaccuming out all the feces that our big boys produce every five minutes! If you are at all interested in our filtration system, here's a thread on another forum where I detail our filtration system. Just look for all my posts. http://www.oscarfish.com/discussion/viewtopic.php?t=65711

mb_barton: i think its a great idea. I have one of my barebottom tank set up like pacu mum does. Except i only have one intake and a power head that blows all the poop towards the intake that is placed 1/4" from the bottom of the tank
