So I have tried and with success, kept fish that I have caught. Examples of fish are chubs, bullheads, etc. But what i'm curious about is, when I have kept them in a tank for two or three days or so. The water starts turning an ugly brown. I caught chubs in a stream that is a bit muddy. So is mud excreting out of the fish? I have caught bullheads in a clear pond with lots of algae growth, but water still turns muddy and I do a lot of water change to try and maintain the clarity. Anyone got any ideas or tips? Thank you for your time.

Any driftwood or leaves in your tank? What's your filtration? How often do you clean the filtration. What are your water parameters ammonia nitrite and nitrate. What size is the tank and what substrate do you have. What are you feeding and how frequently. How often do you do a water change saying you do a lot does not provide us with how much and how often. Some people consider 25% a week a lot while others consider 50% twice a week to be a lot. we need to know all this first.

I don't keep fish anymore at the moment, but was a question I had in mind. I don't have any driftwood or leaves in a 55 gallon tank. I have a (aqua clear fluval power filter), I clean the filtration every month and a half. All water parameters are stable. I have sand/gravel bottom substrate. I fed the fishes once every two days. Lastly I do a 50% water change every three days.

Did you thoroughly wash the substrate when you added it and do you ever vacuum it? Since you mentioned bottom dwelling fish, it's very possible they were rooting around in the substrate for food and stirred up dirt or other debris trapped in it. The only other thing is say to try is change the filter media more often, I have to change the stuff in my tanks about every 2 weeks otherwise I begin to see water discoloration. Just my thoughts.

I washed the substrate very well before I filled up the tank. I vacuum the substrate from time to time, only when I felt like it.

why would you change the media???????????????

the whole point of media is for beneficial bacteria to grow on.....

By filter media I meant filter floss, sponges, activated carbon, etc, not bio media. Though, I do clean my bio media once a year to get rid of trapped debris, never had any issues doing so.
