Water conditions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nitrates: less than 20. Ammonia, nitrite: 0. With PH, you want consistency. If it's the same every time you test it, is close to your tap ph, and isn't crazy high or crazy low, you're good.

Yup. And no problem.

Overstocking = over filtration and bigger water changes. Some people do weekly changes. Personally I do 2 25% to 30% a week. 50 to 60% every week depending on if I've fed lives foods that week.

Ok I will start a new routine next week doing 2 20% water changes. Thank you. Any certain time in between? When do you normally change your filter media? I would do about every 2-3 weeks....

I do my water changes Friday and monday. I like to do wc after the weekend because the weekend is when I'm home the most. So the fish get live food and extra food. Then Monday night I'll do a wc and clean up all the fish crap left from eating so much. Friday I do them to clean whatever mess has occurred during the week. I don't like to have guest over on the weekend and have fish crap all over in my tank. Filter pads... I use canister filters. I try not to open them very often. I'll rinse my mechanical filtration off maybe every 6 to 8 weeks. I just keep on eye on my spray bars to see what the water flows like. If it's really low I know I have filter mantanice to do. For bio filtration there is no need to mess with that. I haven't touched any bio filters in probably 2 years.

Base your water change schedule on nitrate readings. Also, test your tap water for nitrates. If your tank has 40 ppm, and you do a 50% water change, your tank will be at 20 ppm assuming your tap water is 0. More frequent/ larger water changes will result in lower nitrates. Schedule your water changes to keep your nitrates in your target range.
