ok so i kno i can get away with cycleing a tank in about 24-48 hours BUT i need it done in about 30 mins! i just set up a back up grow tank. i have used the old gravel that was kept in a bucket the top layer was dry (heard it can be poisonous) but the deeper the bucket went the wetter it got. i filled it with the dirty water from my larger established tank. i have the same HOB filter on both systems. should i switch out the black sponges from the filter? or maybe just one? am i even doin the right things what can i do. oh yea and i dont have no money to spend since i just cashed out on the tank! thx 4 ur help.

if you already have bacteria in the filter and gravel you could do water changes in all of your other tanks an put the water you take out in it then add some more dechlorinated tapp water to it then you could probly do it

whats prime. the whole thing is filled with established water from other tanks. and i put 20 gallons worth of gravel in a 30 gallon along with other used gravel. it should be ok with just the "dirty" water alone right?

The new tank needs as many items in it as possible which may carry bacteria from established systems. So yes adding filter media, décor, substrate, etc, etc will help you “instant cycle” the tank…

One thing to keep in mind though, as you remove items out of your established tanks you are removing bacteria which that system is counting on… removing filter media, etc from a system can cause it (the mature system) to go into a ‘mini cycle’…

Prime is a dechlorinator made by Seachem… it’s a great product.

Prime has additives in it which “bind” ammonia & nitrite in a non toxic form FOR 24 ~ 48 HOURS. If you rely on this product for it’s binding factors it needs to be added daily, or at least every other day. I would recommend heavy water changes instead or in addition to adding Prime. (for more details on this see the thread about Prime Lowering Oxygen Levels, as there is other good info on Prime with reference links there).

Absolutely false…

The bacteria we want lives on surfaces, not in the water column… therefore using ‘old water’ does little if anything to help cycle a tank…

The single benefit to using old water is that it ensures that the water parameters are the same as the fish moves from one tank to the next. If you are introducing new fish that are not from your old tank there is no benefit to using old tank water as they are not accustom to your other tank's water…

The downside to using old tank water is it has waste build up from your other fish. We all know that fish appreciate fresh water and thrive more so after a (proper) water change, therefore I suggest using all fresh clean water and taking steps to acclimate fish to the new water as needed.

well i just took 45 gallons of water from my established 60 gal. i have the same HOB filter as the new tank. i also have a powerhead/sponge filter in there along with a big fat peice of driftwood. so my question is am i better off taking one of the sponges and carbon cartriges from my established tank and puttin them in the other filter? and letting my established tank rely on the sponge filter, driftwood, gravel, and remaining carbon cartridge & bacteria sponge? or should i rely on the used gravel & dirty water in the new tank? either way the fish need to be in the new tank within the next hour!

i also switched out one set of the sponge & carbon cartridges and switched it to the other filter. im gettin 420 gallons per hour turnover so should it be safe or as safe as ittle get within the hour? its a 30 gal

same filter, same water, and same substract it will be ok, i have doner it twice witout any problems

substrate is from different tank.
half was dried out (bacteria dead) other half was stil damp/wet

100% dirty water from other tank

1 set of carbon cart. & media sponge from established filter

the other set of carbon and sponge has no bacteria

am i good 2 go?

i take it i should feed them in a few days either right?
