take a deep breath. a heater will not cool down the water. your best bet is to remove the questioned heater and test it in a bucket of water with a thermometer. if it is faulty just trash it. you shouldn't have a heater running at all this time of year if you are worrying about cooling the water. I'm dealing with similar problems myself. since your tank is smaller, the water fluctuates more than a larger body of water. you may want to look into getting a clip on style fan and have it blow over the surface of the water. this will increase evaporation and cool it down a bit. it may at least regulate the temp a bit. a chiller could cost you well over 300 dollars so don't even consider this for what you have.

oh thanks dude!!! do they have clip style fans anywhere?

i dunno, you have to look, but since it is the end of summer, most places have fans on sale. i got a little desktop fan for 5 bucks at target that will work to cool off a small tank

I got my two clip on fans at target when I put my egg crate top on my tanks (Its hot here in Sac too 100+ most days) This setup has served me well. Quite a bit more evaporation but that is ok if replaced with RO water.

if you are having problems with the water getting too hott which isnt to good for the fish if they are like 15 to 20 degrees over their native temp try putting a bottle of water in the fridge and once solid ice put it in the tank to help cool down the water.. and make sure you get a heater that sets the temp so you know what temp the tank will get
