Hi. Just recently got a silver around 12" and have been reading that it is good to have stuff at the top of the tank for arrows to look at and maybe prevent drop eye. Read about the ping pong ball and i have dismissed that idea. So was thinking about plants which would have the added bonus of sucking nitrates. Are Hyacinths okay to use and do any of you guys use these. Thanks

they are fine with your aro. the only problem i had is that you need secure lids so the aro will not jump out. so the plants leaves would just touch the glass lids and eventually they would brown and die. you may have better luck than me tho so it's worth a try. i had 2 different plants and they both died in about a month.

Lots of types of duckweed seem like they'd solve this problem. Although maybe they wouldn't absorb much nitrates.

Try a different plant...Here in my state particularly(kerala,India). The govt. are trying to get rid of this plant as it multiplies fast and leads to overgrowth and thus covering the surface and cutting of the oxygen supply. This affects aquatic life a lot.
I live in a waterfront appartment so this hyacinth are there in plenty(depending on tide) so some of them are quite large with a diameter of 3 feet+.
They're leaves grow and become pretty huge, they have long roots and this weed is also suprisingly heavy. It flowers as well, the flowers look really good cant deny that.
Overall its going to require a lot of maintemance. So kepping it in an aro tank especially when aro's are top dwellers Is a BIG NO.
This is just my opinion there could be people who could disagree

amazon frogbit is best but it needs feeding + CO2 to do well, if they are fed well they get really long roots & look great & are good for shading one part of the tank
