I have a 70 gallon cold water coffin tank made of plastic and my idea is to use it to iincrease water volume not use as a filter. Basically the same as a sump but only containing water circulated from the main tank a reservoir of sorts. I know the feed from the tank will need a filter sock and the feed back to the tank will need a pump. Other then that is it a good idea.

so you don't want it to filter, but you know it needs a filter?
if you buy a pond pump that will pass 1/4" solids you could do it without the filter sock, but why not use it as a filter?

:iagree:

Everything in a system should be used to its fullest potential. At least fill it with media. Or heaters. Or plants. Or.....media....
Something.
I wish I had room to add a reservoir to increase overall volume, I would run two sumps if I could!

Hmmm I like the plants idea. But that would mean cutting holes in the top. I already have plenty of filtration I jus wanted to do it to keep a larger volume of water circulating. I have a 20 inch silver aro n a 14 inch tiger shovelnose both in a 5x2x2 atm but they will be going in a 5x3widex2 soon n the other tank is going to my brother. I just figured with an extra 70 gallons it would be better. It is a sealed unit except to inlet n outlet so I. Could in theory whack a pump on one end n let her run.

i dont know what other filters you are running, but if it was me, I'd make the tank a monster filter for your tank and just sell off the other filters. That tank could make a sump with all the filtering youll need and if youre currently running multiple filters this could actually reduce operating costs
