Would it be better if I move the water intake for my fluval 404 filter away from my out flow ? I was thinking it would be better towards the middle of the tank instead of right next to each other.

Place the outake and intake in the same corner....For example, if using the Venturi output, the output will simply push the water around from the top right corner and circulate down to the bottom right corner(where the intake is)...

 Positioning is often subjective & dependent on a number of different things.

1) Tank size - gls. as well as dimentions?
2) Fish - type & how many?
3) Filters - single or multiple setup?
4) Movement - min. or max

My choice, 'in' & 'out' together. 5' tank, lg. messy fish, slightly overstocked. Multi setup w/ 'cans' on either end & 'HOB' in the middle between 2 'p/h's for lots of movement.
If the '404' is your sole filter & your tank is long, the split to mid-tank might give you better circulation. If more movement is needed, maybe a p/h could help. Size up your situation & your fishes needs. Then position accordingly. There's no set rule. Good Luck, "T"
