Im getting a new fish tomorrow and my tank has been cycling for 2 weeks now just waiting on for the fish to come in. And they said my water was perfect but only the nitrate was a little higher than perfect, they said it could be from the water from your cities water. Is the water fine for a new fish or should I do a 20% water change?
Thanks

Perfect nitrate? I suppose perfect would be zero, but you're not gonna get this unless your tank is heavily planted. Nitrate should be ideal not perfect. Get yourself an API liquid test kit and learn to test your water parameters yourself. Ideal nitrate for non planted tank should be around 20-40ppm.......the lower the better

Need to know the type of fish before recommending nitrate levels. Plenty of fish out there that aren't going t do well in 20-40 ppm of nitrates. 2 week cycle, what method was used to achieve this?

african aro at what size??? you're going to have one hell of a time keeping up with its appetite if its a juvi. They need about 10x more care than your average silver. You should be doing water changes weekly to keep nitrates down, but as others said get a test kit and post some numbers. Only way to answer your question correctly.

Ps, How large is your tank? Minimum recommended tank size is a 300 gallon and if it is, a juvi is going to have a really hard time finding food. And if you dont mind me asking how did you cycle your tank?

If you are correct that the nitrate is high in your water source water changes will not help much. You will need to look at a chemical (prime?) or other method to lower them from the start. I had this problem with well water before and solved it by getting buckets of water from a friend in town.

Prime would work but your gonna need a ton of it.. haha! Their web site states it lasts from 24-48 hours so you'll be redosing it every other day. But if your on city water I'm pretty sure your "high" nitrates isnt from the city water. Highest nitrate from city water I have seen was 15 ppm which isnt that bad.

Yeah I know the African arowana is gonna be hard, I actually have him going into a 10 gallon with a sponge filter bc he's gonna be 3.5 inches and so he can find his food
