There are Central American cichlids that (in nature) come from strong flow environments, and some that come from low flow environments.
I usually try to base the flow in my tanks on the type environments, the type of cichlid I keep, comes from in nature.
Many riverine species come from areas where a wall of water is moving at millions of gallons per second, and are unphased by any paltry movement I can provide with a pump or filter.
Others live in oxbows or lakes where this is not the case.
In some of my tanks, the flow is strong enough that plants cannot stand straight, and for some species, this has an effect on how aggressive they are with each other, soon after that flow is reduced, they start killing each other, if the flow is maintained aggression is minimal.

Using the term Central American is too vague a term to answer your question with any certainty because species come from a wide range of environments.
