I'm thinking of starting a tank for cold water fish. I've caught some really pretty sunfish in the streams near me. What parameters are you guys keeping your tanks at? Do you test the water in your area and try to mimic that?

Alot of times you tap waters parameters are close to what your local water bodies are. Unless you have an r/o system or a water softner.

Perfect, I had to get rid of my cichlids before deploying to Afghanistan. When I got home the room was full of my mother-in-laws stuff. It's cleaned out now, so I will probably start to cycle my 75 and hit a stream to see if I can nab something.

just keep it stable, don't try to change the parameters. These are hardy fish that can live in all sorts of water environments, stability is the key.

That said, the pond I get most of my fish from is actually a secondary water source for my town, so the water is almost exactly the same.

Well I got my 75gal up and running. Yesterday I went into a lfs and was able to get a few small sunfish to help the tank cycle. I only wanted one, but they ended up giving me 3. They seem to be doing fine and once I feel the tank is stable I'll look for something from the local waterways. Now to go find some extra driftwood.

The water from your tap should be fine, that's what I use. For the drift wood, make sure you try to find a harder type wood as it will fair better in your tank.
