Water pH for gar?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I kept floridas in a ph of 8. I think you can acclimate them to suit your needs but I'm sure someone will give a more definitive answer.

Most species of gars aren't too finicky about pH, and should do fine as long as the pH isn't too extreme towards either end of the pH spectrum. The important thing to remember is that there shouldn't be any sudden or quick swings in pH. This is especially so with cuban gars. With cubans I've also found them to do better in higher pH values. I keep mine (along with floridas, longnose and gator) at between 7.5 and 7.7

Yep.. I've found most fish.. includeing my floridas do better in a stable PH then a fluxuating one. As long as your not crazy high or crazy low. Under 6.5 or over 8.0.. anywhere inbetween should be acceptable as long as it's maintained. Don't have any other gars then my 2 floridas the one use to be closer to 8.0.. now they're at about 7.6 and I haven't seen any difference. I also was very careful and drip acclimated when we moved, to make sure there was lil' to no PH shock ect.
