Canada... i wish.
what is the best filter to polish tank water?

right now i have two eheim pro II 2028 and they do a great job for bio filtration but not so good with mechanical/polishing filtration. does anyone have any diy ideas or type filter i should get.

btw i was thinking of making a diy sump just for mechanical and some bio out of storage drawers and a rubbermaid tub...good idea or not? :nilly:

diatom filter. clearest water you can get. period.

i was looking at those but they are really $$$.. is there any cheaper alternatives or diy's?

For a cheaper route, I would suggest a power head with a sponge filter on the end... I run a maxi-jet 1200 w/ a sponge in my 125 and it clears the water up really nice and my loaches love the extra current :)

I was gonna say diatom... Thats the original badboy of water polishing. Then I would say a good power head attachment but its all been covered. Maybe an AC110 ? lol

As far as DIY, when I introduce a carbon media into any of my filters, the effect is almost immediate on the clarity.

Cheap way out, and what I use is the Magnum HOB filter. It comes with a micron cartridge and you can use with or without diatom powder.

I mix in 1/3 cup of powder and run for about 6-8 hours once a week. Tank stays crystal clear even with my huge bio load.

Cheaper and easier to use than a Vortex.

filterfloss ftw

Howdy,

You can either use a sponge filter on the intake, or a micronpad (e.g. HERE)covering up the top media layer.
