Well I've had africans for a few years on and off but never anything more than buying a few throwing them in a tank along with a few pots, heater, and filter. However now I have 8 of them in a 55G tank along with one pleco and they seem to be doing relatively well. My questions comes in here, I am turning my 180 into a straight discus aquarium and have ordered my R/O filter for the tank. I know I read somewhere that someone used the purged membrane water for their african tank to help make it a little harder. Any thoughts on this is a good idea or just keep runing treated tap water to mine? My water isn't really hard or soft at this point but mid ranged water.

well you could purge the membrane into a bucket test the water, and let it sit and test again to see if it crashes. Steady is best!
