Hey guys...

I'm wondering how important it is for My WC Labiatus to have the pH exactly like that in their home environment, Lake Nicaragua? I read somewhere its almost pH 8.0... Is that correct?

Actually, reports have registered Lake Nicaragua at 8.5 pH. ("American Cichlids 2")

So increasing the pH to about 8.5 would be good?

What is your ph? Once correctly acclamated they will be fine in your water. You don't have to have that high a ph for them. I have some wild Altum Angelfish from a ph of about 4.5 that are fine and growing in my 6.9 ph.

My pH is spot on 6.0

I guess my point is, would my labiatus not thrive better in a pH of 8.5?

If you wanted you could add some crushed coral to the substrate or in a mesh bag in the filter. You'll need to do small water changes more often so you do't change it too drasticly at one time. My advise is not to mess with water chemistry better off with a stable ph than to try and adjust it. You have a good ph for a lot of the South Americans.

lol... I know a bit about nitrates and nitrites and Ammonia...but thanks anyway. Only been keeping fish for 30 years... just curious if the pH levels might make my wild caught labiatus a bit more comfortable and inclined to breed :D

Yeah just leave it the ph doesn't make them grow any quicker its the nitrates and nitrites u have to worry about and if it hasnt died yet then he won't at that level
