There is no 'safe form' of ammonia, ammonium is just less lethal. BB is still able to consume ammonium anyway. Either way I want 0 ammonia and nitrite, still striving for low nitrates too, might have to set up a denitrator.

The barra will be gone soon which will help, he's a massive bio load on the system.

Thanks for the responses and help too guys, much appreciated.

Sorry I don't agree. Ammonium isn't toxic to fish, elsewise all the products that detoxify ammonia by converting to ammonium would be a waste of time.

Purigen adsorbs ammonia, nitrite and nitrates. It works for me placed in canisters, HOBs and overflows. I don't have a denitrator, although it would be more efficient in one that's rigged optimally for it.

Yes those products detoxify ammonia, that doesn't mean it removes it all together, it still is bad, just not as toxic. Regardless, relying on chemicals to remove ammonia does not sit well with me, I want 0 ammonia. The barras getting picked up sunday so that will remove a massive bio load from the system, hopefully it will help temporarily while I order more bio balls and wait for them to grow some BB.

I know what you are saying about chemicals. But in an emergency they have their place. Ammonium though is not toxic to fish. It isn't 'less toxic but still bad'. At least according to everything I've read.

Maybe dump sump bottled beneficial bacteria in while you're at it like Daniel suggested? Couldn't hurt could it?
