A little back story. We had several power outages the last several months that lasted up to 3 hours each time. My tanks cycle crashed during at least one of the outages. Once I realized the cycle had crashed I started doing more water changes to keep ammonia down while the tank recovered. So I have had a battle with the cycle in the tank and power outages. I got everything back on track or so I thought. I started getting bacterial blooms with water changes and nitrates are very high now but zero ammonia and zero nitrites. The tank is very lightly stocked with only two fish and its 300 gallons with a 65 gallon sump. I had two fish in the tank both jags and the largest is 11.5".
The question is with the bacterial blooms. Will the high nitrates cause the blooms? From what I read it sounded like ammonia and nitrites caused the blooms not nitrates. The tanks been cloudy the whole time after starting the cycle back over. I did a 25 - 30% water change a week ago and its still cloudy from that water change. I know if I do a 25% or more water change the water will be cloudy enough that it will look like a foggy day.
