water softening 'how to' question

i am looking at some fish that require a softer water than my tap can provide,,

is RO really the only way , or is there other water softening ways for aquarium use ,,

i am using eheim pro 3 2080 ,

can i add something to the filter media ??

Howdy,

You can soften water to a certain degree by filtering thru peat. But that has limited capacity and needs to be replaced regularly. Besides that, an RO unit is your best bet.
