I have an extra 35 gal tub that is just laying around my apt. I have been thinging about using it as a container to pretreat the water for my discus tank. If I did this i would hold 20- 30 gallons at a time, I try and keep the water around a ph of 6.5 and as soft as possible.Since the water is sitting there I figured I should try and do as much to it as i canbefore putting it into the tank I noticed that local home depot has inline water softners, not the entire house type but more the put under you kitchen sink ones. Would these provide any benefit to the water parameters. Right now my water is 7.4 to 7.8 out of the tap, I treat with wardleys ph 6.5 and a water softner pad, the water hardness fluctuates from around 75ppm up to 125 ppm. I do a 10 gal water change every other day and 25 gal on the weekend. The other option I was considering was placing some pete into the tub to let the water soak in it and circulating it with the pump I use to fill the aquarium. At the end of the summer I am moving back to the upper peninsula of michigan. The tap water up there is 7.8 on the low end with water hardness above 150 so any system that helps would really come in handy. I am in college so my funds are limited but I really would like to see the discus I have thrive.

I think what you are really looking for is an RO unit. Home Depot and Lowes (probably also Menards; we don't have them here) has them for $158. Lowes has a larger unit for $198.
