Anyone store water for water changes? Im thinking of setting up a trash can in my basement to store water to use for my water changes so I dont have to carry buckets of water up and down the steps. Will a standard 50 gallon trash can from lowes work or will it break from being filled? Id like to add a float valve to it and just have it hooked up to a water line so it stays filled. Does anyone do this?

I've used a Rubbermaid Brute 50G (gray) for water storage with no problems. Even bought the dolly to make it easier to roll around the basement.

Look on Craigslist for "barrel" or "rain barrel." There are often recyclers who have lots of plastic food grade barrels of various sizes that have only been used once to ship something innocuous like apple juice. And get a lid if possible.

I've bought 55 gallon plastic food grade barrels with lids locally (in CT) for $45.00
They work great and I know they will be safe for the fish.

i started with a new spray container from Murocks, a local feed store, and used Brute garbage cans. both work well and have lasted for years... i even used a cheap, $9, garbage can but it bowed a bunch so i don't trust it. it hasn't failed though.....

No bowing on the Rubbermaid Brute 50G container, as stated above. I only used it for a couple of years and now I just refill the tanks after a water change directly from the tap, adding conditioner as the tank fills with temperature controlled water.

I've used a 44 gal heavy duty trash can from Home Depot for water changes. It works great! Just get a round trash can as the circular shape distributes the force of the water evenly.
