I've gotten rid of all my jag's tankmates in his 125 and am now going to leave him solo for now, maybe try getting him a female down the road, but we'll see. I've always been curious as to why most websites say the water temp for these guys varies so much compared to most other central american cichlids (77-92 F). I just sold his tankmates on Saturday and have always kept the temp anywhere between 77 and 81. What would the positives and negatives be if I decided to turn the temp up to the 83-85 F range?

Higher temp more active, faster metabolism, more aggression. In my experience not any downsides that I'm aware of just a little higher than usual

At temps of 82'F and above, the bacteria that causes the disease known a "ducklips" becomes extremely virulent. Most Central American cichlids will do very well at temps in the mid 70's.
The average temp of Lake Mangua (hence the name managuense), and Lake Nicaragua are approx 77'F

In my experiences I think 80deg F is optimal for parachromis species as well as most other ca/sa's with the exception of black nasties/beanies/similar. I have done 77-78deg F with no problems, but growth seems to benefit more at 80deg F. I also haven't seen any benefits at 82dg over 80dg. IMHO of course.

Hotter the water the less oxygen you have.
