if i keep my water temp at 86 will it prevent disease and keep the fish more active or will it be bad for the fishes

Howdy,

That's pretty high ... typical discus temperature. I have no practical experience with it, but I would say the elevated temperature will result in a shorter life expectancy of your fish due to increased metabolism. That's a long-term effect.

IMO, there is no reason to deviate from a fish's natural habitat's conditions long-term. If it was beneficial, mother nature would have done it already ;)

I'd have to agree and disagree at the same time. It's more like survival of the fittest would have made it so the natural habitat inhabits only the specimens most fit to live in it and therefore the natural habitat conditions are best.

I think keeping fish at a high temperature does more good than harm, even small goldfish have a higher survival rate IME at higher temperatures. But once fish are big enough, I'd lower the temperature to the high 70s to low 80s to make up for the metabolism factor where they will die sooner. At this temperature they are still very active. And it's also warm enough to prevent disease.

In the tropics temperature near 90 are the norm during the day. . it gets cooler at night but still around the 80s. They do fine..but like Harley K said, lower 80s is optimal for most tropical fish .

Also having high temps at all times would not equate to healthier disease free fish.

higher temps= more electricity= bigger bill.
I'll keep mine where they are for that reason alone haha

my ray tank is at 81-82.. .any lower and i notice a drop in activity from the usual. They get too sluggish.
